ALBERTA
was known primarily as a farming and ranching province until the
1950s. The lively city of Calgary was the centre of an expansive
cattle ranching industry and the doorway to the Rockies. The capital
of the province, Edmonton, languished somewhat in the background
until the discovery of major oil deposits in the north. Today
Edmonton is known as the "Gateway to the North," a thriving city
with an indoor fantasyland-the gigantic West Edmonton Mall.
The
historic rivalry between Calgary and Edmonton is carried on in
a friendly fashion with annual festivals-Edmonton's Klondike Days
and the world-famous Calgary Stampede. Alberta also claims some
of Canada's most beautiful and interesting areas, including the
Rockies and Dinosaur Provincial Park, the site of extensive fossil
remains.
